SUMMARY:Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis Techniques for Qualitative Data
DESCRIPTION:About this event:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis intermediate level workshop introduces techniques for analysing qualitative data such as interview results. By the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to conduct these types of analyses in a clear and systematic manner. The workshop will review the main techniques using MS Excel. A general overview of computer-assisted qualitative analysis software will also be presented. Key techniques will be presented step-by-step\, using a real-life case study. An Excel file workbook will be provided so that workshop registrants can apply the techniques discussed directly. Among other things\, best practice in quantifying data using percentages and proportions will be discussed\, as will the pros and cons of quantifying qualitative data. \nLearning outcomes: Apply qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques for qualitative data\, understand the pros and cons of quantifying qualitative data \nAbout the Facilitators: \nSimon Roy\, PhD\, CE – Simon is a GGI Senior Associate and has over 28 years of program evaluation experience. Simon has a PhD in Sociology (University Paris -Nanterre) and is a Credentialed Evaluator. Since 2001\, Simon has facilitated multiple intermediate level and advanced level workshops for the Canadian Evaluation Society\, at national conferences and for many chapters. He has also designed courses for the CES\, including the current version of the online survey course; he delivered this course multiple times. Most recently he delivered a half-day workshop at the CES Conference in Quebec City on qualitative and quantitative approaches to analyzing qualitative data. He is also part-time professor at Ottawa University and l’École nationale d’administration publique\, where he teaches program evaluation and performance measurement at the graduate level on a regular basis. Simon is also a published author. He recently published a book chapter on the professionalization of evaluation (with B. Gauthier). \nPascale Latulippe\, MA – Pascale is a Senior Consultant at GGI with more than 5 years of experience working in program evaluation. Pascale has a Graduate Diploma in Program Evaluation (University of Ottawa)\, a Master’s degree in International Development (University of Queensland)\, and\, a Bachelor degree in Peace & Conflict Studies (University of Toronto). Pascale has co-facilitated a number of workshops including this half day workshop at a Canadian Evaluation Society Conference.

SUMMARY:Logic Models and Performance Measurement
DESCRIPTION:In this intermediate level course\, participants will advance their logic model and performance measurement skills. In the logic model portion of the course\, participants will develop a complex logic model\, role play explaining it to evaluation clients\, and respond to questions/critiques. DESCRIPTION:Data visualization as a hot topic in the evaluation world\, especially in knowledge transfer activities. This fast-paced webinar will focus on a specific type of data visualization\, namely infographics – artistic or graphic presentation of data to communicate insights. We will briefly orient infographics in the realm of data visualization\, illustrating some different types of infographics. Then our focus will shift to the science of why we should use infographics in our communication suite to our various audiences (clients and funders). We then venture into design theory\, calling on the works of data visualization experts Bernard Marr\, Stephanie Evergreen\, and Garr Reynolds. The bulk of the time will be aimed at specific design elements of graphics\, colour\, font\, and layout\, which help us tell the story of our most important element: the data. We will then put these elements together with examples\, and then look at resources and tools for infographic production. Since founding his consulting practice (www.rae-consult.com)\, he has worked with profession regulators and governing bodies in accounting and financial management\, healthcare\, law and international sanctions\, as well as with the learning and development units of two of the big five Canadian banks. He began his better data visualization journey in 2008\, focusing on effective presentation strategies for PowerPoint. He now blogs and speaks about data visualization\, and has been an invited guest blogger on Stephanie Evergreen’s effective data visualization blog. He has produced infographics for official CES communications\, has conducted a CES national webinar on infographics and has facilitated workshops on infographics for CES-ON and CES-MB. SUMMARY:Inclusive and Equitable Evaluation Using a Theory of Change
DESCRIPTION:About the Session \nEvaluators and implementers develop Theories of Change (ToCs) to explain the logic of a proposed project\, demonstrate how desired change could happen in a particular context\, and provide data-driven rationales for how and why it will succeed in generating impact. ToCs are developed in the proposal phase or early in project implementation but are not returned to during the rest of the project. Yet\, even the best-laid plans often go awry\, and evaluators miss key opportunities to reflect on their approach. To promote equity and social justice in our work\, it’s crucial to challenge our own epistemological foundations by identifying and testing our biases to consider the ramifications of our practice. One such way to do this is by iteratively and deliberately testing a ToC throughout the project lifecycle. \nBy using a ToC not only as a product\, but as a process\, evaluators can reap a multitude of benefits such as: proactively identifying risks\, triggering reflection and iterative learning\, appropriately adapting work plans\, strengthening communication\, establishing (or maintaining) stakeholder buy-in\, and facilitating proper hand-over. \nAbout the Facilitator \nElizabeth Sweitzer is a Monitoring and Evaluation Subject Matter Expert\, with +11 years experience as a facilitator\, course instructor and educator for professional development and executive education workshops\, as well as + 7 years experience in measuring performance of international development programs and research programs across private\, public\, and social sectors. She currently works as a Senior Consultant with Guidehouse for programs related to energy and sustainability. Her specialty is providing Program Evaluation\, guiding clients on methods to improve performance management. She possesses a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Cornell University\, is a Certified Change Management Professional\, and Certified Project Management Professional. Elizabeth was a Fulbright Fellow to Brazil (2015). She is fluent in English\, Spanish and Portuguese\, and proficient in French.

SUMMARY:Facilitation Skills for Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Practitioners
DESCRIPTION:At some point in their careers\, Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) practitioners will be placed in a position where they have to communicate their work to a group of people. This may be to project staff\, policy makers and other stakeholders. Sometimes\, the meeting will be comprised of people who are not fully versed with the technical M&E jargon\, or to people who may not be receptive to some less-than-positive findings from an evaluation report. Likewise\, the group may consist of people with diverse backgrounds and competing interests\, yet their consensus is needed. \nThis is where skills are needed to navigate the group (and power) dynamics to effectively facilitate a meeting that is engaging\, elicits participation and produces tangible results. \nThis course covers: \n\nThe facilitation process\nFacilitation roles and responsibilities\nVarious facilitation techniques\, including when and how to use them for best effect\nActive Listening\nGroup Dynamics\nCharacteristics of Good Facilitation\nEnergisers and Ice breakers\nAddressing difficult people situations\n\nThe course is highly interactive with role-play and simulations. The live Zoom sessions are scheduled for Monday\, November 20; Wednesday\, November 22 and Friday\, November 24 2023 beginning at 1 PM EST. Run time is 2 hours. The Tuesday and Thursday of that week will be used for homework/assignments and self-paced study on an online learning platform\, which will be provided before the course begins. \nKey Canadian Evaluation Society Competencies: \n4. Oxfam’s feminist approach challenges practitioners to think differently about evidence\, push the boundaries on data collection\, and question who gives meaning and power to knowledge. Through these\, challenges\, participants will engage in an iterative process of applying and reflecting the principles of the approach. \nThis workshop will introduce the seven foundations as well as discuss what MEAL can look like at different points along a ‘gender spectrum’ (i.e.: gender aware\, gender responsive and gender transformative). DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jeff Corntassel shares his experience using the First Nations Perspective to decolonize research. \nRegister here! \n\n\nAbout the Webinar: Braiding and Restorying Indigenous Research Methodologies: Engaging with Responsive Research \nWith extensive experience in practicing community-centered research methods\, Dr. Jeff Corntassel and Dr. Jacqueline Quinless developed an approach called “Responsive Research” in 2017. This talk will examine the ways that relational accountabilities\, responsibilities\, and strength-based approaches are key strands of a responsive research model. Utilizing a braiding methodology\, Corntassel will look at examples of how Indigenous knowledge systems are woven alongside western methods in ways that are distinct from a “two-eyed seeing” approach. From a Responsive Research perspective\, research processes developed by and for Indigenous peoples that affirm and strengthen their self-determining authority are just as important as research outcomes.  \nThis webinar is a presention of the CES-ON Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Anti-Oppression (DEIAO) Committee.  \nAbout the Presenter: \nDr. Jeff Corntassel is a writer\, teacher and father from the Cherokee Nation. He is currently Associate Professor in the Indigenous Studies Department at the University of Victoria and Acting Director of the Centre for Indigenous Research and Community-Led Engagement (CIRCLE). His research and teaching interests focus on “Everyday Acts of Resurgence” and the intersection between sustainable self-determination\, Indigenous resurgence\, climate change and community well-being. He situates his work at the grassroots with many Indigenous led community-based programs and initiatives ranging from local food movement initiatives\, land-based renewal projects\, understanding Indigenous fatherhood\, to gendered colonial violence and protection of homelands. His recently published book is an edited volume in collaboration with Kanaka Maoli professors at the University of Hawai’i\, Manoa\, with a collection of works from twenty-two Indigenous an non-Indigenous contributors and is entitled Everyday Acts of Resurgence: People\, Places\, Practices (2018\, Daykeeper Press). He is currently completing work for his forthcoming book on Sustainability\, Climate Action and Gender-Based Resurgence.

RIE triangulates perspectives of three separate groups of experts. Three methodologies that are central to RIE will provide learners with an understanding to apply RIE. RIE is a cost-efficient and quick approach to assessing impacts and does not intrude on design or implementation of the program. Evaluation learners will benefit when they add RIE to their toolbox of evaluation methods. \nParticipants will have virtual hands-on interactive learning opportunities across multiple sessions that are comprised of three 3-hour learning modules and optional two 2-hour learning labs and one final session for questions and discussions about applications. The labs will offer the opportunity to applying the method using real-world cases using RIE methods learned in the modules. SUMMARY:Feminist Principles in Monitoring\, Evaluation\, Accountability and Learning
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will guide participants through Oxfam Canada’s Seven Foundations to Feminist Monitoring\, Evaluation\, Accountability and Learning (MEAL). Oxfam’s feminist approach challenges practitioners to think differently about evidence\, push the boundaries on data collection\, and question who gives meaning and power to knowledge. We then venture into design theory\, calling on the works of data visualization experts Bernard Marr\, Stephanie Evergreen\, Garr Reynolds and Edward Tufte. The bulk of the time will be aimed at specific design elements of graphics\, colour\, and font\, which provide the visual cues to our most important element: the data. We will then put these elements together with examples\, and then look at resources and tools for infographic production. He began his better data visualization journey in 2008\, focusing on effective presentation strategies for PowerPoint. He now blogs and speaks about data visualization\, and has been an invited guest blogger on Stephanie Evergreen’s effective data visualization blog. He has produced infographics for official CES communications\, has conducted a CES national webinar on infographics and has facilitated workshops on infographics for CES-ON and CES-MB. DESCRIPTION:What if we viewed evaluation as a service as well as a means of assessing value and supporting decision-making? A design-driven approach to evaluation is one that brings insights from service design into the practice of evaluation by integrating creativity\, craft\, and empathy with data-gathering\, feedback\, and sensemaking into the evaluator’s role. This approach\, which brings together design thinking and evaluative thinking\, explores ways to embed evaluation into a program’s development structure\, particularly for those that are operating in domains of high complexity and need for innovation. Design-driven evaluation is an approach\, drawing on utilization-focused\, developmental\, and participatory evaluation methods and techniques and brings them together with the creative problem orientation\, interactivity\, and end-user focus from the world of professional design. \nThis workshop will introduce evaluators to the fundamentals of a design-driven approach to evaluation. It will orient evaluators to the role that design can play in shaping both the evaluation and the program itself and is suited for those interested in expanding their practice\, working more closely with innovative or complex programs and for those interested in developmental evaluation. The workshop will introduce design theory and methods\, involve interactive activities aimed at illustrating design thinking in practice in ways that can be used both in-person and at distance\, and how evaluators can play a pivotal role in supporting product\, program\, and service innovation in new ways. \nAbout the Facilitator: \nCameron Norman is a Credentialed Evaluator and consultant who works with organizations seeking to innovate more effectively and use evaluation and service design methods to support that work. As the Principal and President of Cense Ltd.\, Cameron has worked with non-profits\, social services\, healthcare\, and governments to design and implement innovation-focused programs that embed evaluation in their service offering to support their evolution and transformation. Cameron earned his PhD in Behavioural and Social Sciences from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto where he continues to serve as an Adjunct Faculty Member and a Master of Design degree in Strategic Foresight and Innovation from OCAD University where he’s taught systems and service design methods. \nIn 2016\, Cameron partnered with the American Evaluation Association to create and deliver the Design Loft Initiative\, a ‘micro-conference’ within the annual AEA convention that provided workshops for evaluators on the methods of design. DESCRIPTION:Light-touch Project Management Tools for Evaluators \nThe sheer volume of guidance in the PMBOK® Guide and other project management resources can make it challenging for evaluators to know which project management tools to prioritize\, and when and how to apply them. To paraphrase Tommy Lasorda\, the effective management of an evaluation project is like ‘holding a dove – you need to hold it tightly enough that it doesn’t fly away\, but not so tightly that you crush it.’ This online workshop provides theory and hands-on experience applying light-touch project management tools that have been tailored for evaluation projects. \nBy the end of the three-hour online workshop\, participants will be able to: \n· Describe how the project management mindset of “define then deliver” can be applied to evaluation projects. \n· Construct a work breakdown structure (WBS) to articulate the scope of a project in terms of concrete deliverables. \n· Describe how the deliverables in a WBS can be used as the foundation for schedule and budget development. \n· Implement deliverable-based project monitoring and control using a simple tracking sheet. \nThis project management workshop aligns directly with CES competency 4.0: Management Practice. The workshop aims to support program evaluators with foundational skills and tools that help manage projects/evaluations such as work plans\, coordinating accountabilities and resources (including budget) at outlined in the CES Competencies for Canadian Evaluation Practice. Marika holds a BScPT from the University of Alberta and an MSc from the University of Toronto. Prior to her current role\, Marika worked as a clinician and clinical researcher at Toronto Rehab\, Bloorview Research Institute\, and Regent Park Community Health Centre. Marika is also a retired professional dancer and mother of one. \nDr. Cameron Norman\, C.E.\, is a professional designer\, psychologist\, educator\, and evaluator who works with human service organizations to organize and support innovation for wellbeing. DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThe overall purpose of this two day intermediate to advanced level workshop is to focus on how performance measurement frameworks are built\, their technical properties\, and on how they add value to organizational decision-making. The challenges and limitations of developing performance measurement systems will also be emphasized. The workshop will present current approaches and research based practices in the performance measurement field. It is designed to bring your measures to life and to make performance measurement about transformation and not just about accountability. \nThe workshop format utilizes formal presentations\, interactive exercises\, discussions\, small group activities\, and case studies. Emphasis is placed on the relevance\, utility\, technical\, and practical application of performance measurement. DESCRIPTION:There are 47 tools and processes used in Project Management. Which ones are best suited to your evaluation practice? Join us this April for a workshop that will expand on four key project management tools you can use to advance and hone your evaluation practice. \nThe sheer number of tools and processes in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) can make it challenging for evaluators to know which tools to apply\, and when. This workshop provides theory and hands-on experience applying four PMBOK® derived light-touch project management tools that have been tailored for evaluation projects. All tools can be applied using the standard Microsoft Office suite of applications. \nParticipants will work with two case studies used to illustrate project management in practice\, with time for participants to share their own learnings and experiences. The workshop concludes with a facilitated session using a modified version of the PMBOK® risk management processes to help participants identify\, and begin to develop mitigation strategies for\, the risks most likely to affect evaluation projects.
