Message to CES-On Members on September 30

September 30 marks the annual National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. Today is an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on and learn more about the legacy of colonialism, residential schools, and anti-Indigenous oppression in Canada.

It is also a day to commit to action throughout the year. We encourage all our members to learn more about Indigenous history and settler and state violence; to learn more about Indigenous evaluation methodologies and reflect on how evaluation has affected Indigenous communities; and to support, uplift, and celebrate Indigenous voices, perspectives, and leadership each day.

Next steps:

  • Read the Calls to Action
  • Learn more about Orange Shirt Day
  • Read the UNDRIP
  • Explore a reading list
  • Donate to the IRSSS

At CES-ON, we have started working on our own approach to Truth and Reconciliation. Some of the steps we’ve taken in the last year include:

  • Creating the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-Oppression (DEIAO) Committee, which guides the chapter in operationalizing our commitment to anti-racist values;
  • Partnering with Dr. Jeff Corntassel on the recent webinar Braiding and Restorying Indigenous Research Methodologies;
  • Partnering with Reciprocal Consulting to develop the upcoming workshop Culturally Responsive Evaluation Training (see below);
  • Offering a land acknowledgment at the beginning of each board and committee meeting.
We look forward to deepening this work throughout the year.
